The origin of Jasmine
The name "Jasmin", of Arabic-Persian origin, is composed of the combination of the terms Jas meaning despair, and Min meaning lie, which evokes betrayal in reference to the torments of Fatima, the daughter of Muhammad.
For centuries, jasmine has been the symbol oflove and femininity in the East. Its first use was to scent tea and to be used as an ornament in ceremonies.
Jasmine comes from the botanical family Oleaceae. Native to southwest Asia, it is mainly produced in China, India, Egypt, Italy and Morocco. The flowers are harvested at the end of the warm season, from August to October. The flowers open before dawn and should therefore be picked as early as possible to avoid the sun burning the petals.
Jasmine in perfumery
Today, jasmine is an essential raw material inperfumery, especially in women's fragrances.
Of the three hundred known species of jasmine, two are the most widely used in the perfume world:
- The jasmine sambac from India, known for its facets of orange blossom and fresh notes.
- The jasmin grandiflorum of Egypt or Grasse, for its floral, fruity, animal and powdery facets.
Its sweet, flowery notes combine perfectly with ylang-ylang, rose, patchouli and sandalwood to create sensual, soft and intoxicating fragrances. Perfumers love it for its sweet and flowery notes that bring softness and lightness to the fragrance. You can find these notes in our fragrance Jasmine & Solar Ylang.
